Punk fashion invaded the catwalks of Fashion Week, before taking over street looks and ending up in our wardrobes. How do you wear the punk trend today?

In 2023, the "complete punk" look is not part of the zeitgeist. The post-punk trend is more about integrating one main or a few small punk elements throughout a look, for example: A black mesh top. Fishnet tights.

Total leather looks, tartan prints and punk accessories were the order of the day at a number of shows during Fashion Week Autumn-Winter 2022/2023. As Fashion Week is undeniably a harbinger of fashion trends to come, it looks like it's time to get in on the punk trend. But how do you go about it without going overboard?

Punk fashion, from the 70s to today's Fashion Week catwalks

What is punk? Born in the mid-70s, this movement was first adopted by the music world, breaking with the hippie wave that had dominated the seventies. Led by liberated, assertive, committed and even rebellious spirits, the punk revolution also attacked fashion, erasing flower power and covering it in black and leather.

Hôde to Vivienne!

For 40 years, Vivienne Westwood has been the embodiment of British punk, the art of provoking and shaking up codes. She can and has allowed herself to do just about anything. Between provocation and haute couture, she has managed to add just the right touch of decadence to every collection.

Unlike the 70s, when punk was born, today's style is much more subtle.

The key pieces to keep in mind when following the punk trend are leather jackets, vinyl pants, tartan or houndstooth prints, leather mittens, biker boots, vintage t-shirts with messages, dark gray denim and leather trenches. It's up to you to confront them with other influences, such as sixties or nineties fashion.
